After the dastardly terror attack in South Kashmir’s Pahalgam where at least 27 tourists lost their lives, Union Home Minister Amit Shah landed in Srinagar on Tuesday to preside over a high-level security meeting. The visit is made within hours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordering Shah to immediately assess the situation and ensure that the culprits are identified and brought to justice. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself welcomed Shah at the Srinagar airport, emphasizing the gravity and urgency of the situation.

High-Level Security Review Scheduled

The high-level meeting, which is likely to have top officials from the Intelligence Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other central agencies, will evaluate the prevailing security situation in the Valley, especially in tourist areas such as Pahalgam, where the attack took place. The Resistance Front (TRF), the Pakistan-sponsored proxy of Lashkar-e-Taiba, has taken responsibility for the attack targeting Hindu tourists in the popular Baisaran valley.

Amit Shah to Visit Hospitals, Meet Security Forces

Sources say Shah will also go to the hospital where the wounded are being treated and interact with security personnel deployed in the area. The visit is the Centre’s quick response to what is being termed as one of the most lethal attacks on civilians in years. The Home Minister had previously presided over a virtual meeting with senior intelligence and security officials to oversee the immediate response and discuss actionable intelligence.

“Innocent Blood Will Be Avenged,” Says Amit Shah

On X (formerly Twitter), Amit Shah posted, “Deeply anguished by the Pahalgam attack. I have spoken to senior security officials and will personally review the situation in Srinagar. Every drop of innocent blood will be avenged. Terrorists and their handlers will face the consequences.”

J&K Leadership Assures Full Support

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has denounced the attack in strongest possible words, described it as an “abomination” and promised that the state government would work in close coordination with central agencies to regain the confidence of citizens and tourists.

As Kashmir struggles to come to terms with the horror of the massacre, Amit Shah’s arrival also heralds an increased thrust for counter-terror operations, coupled with a rigorous review of the security infrastructure that exists, especially in non-local tourist-infested areas. The political and security establishment as a whole is unanimous in its determination to squash the perpetrators of violence and avert such incidents in the future.
