Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has called for a new law to ensure swift justice in rape cases in India. Banerjee highlighted that the current conviction rate for rape cases stands at just 26%, meaning only 26 out of every 100 reported cases result in a conviction, leaving 74 offenders unpunished. He has demanded an “anti-rape law” that guarantees trials and verdicts within 50 days, followed by severe penalties for the perpetrators.

Banerjee’s remarks follow recent protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which has led to heightened security around the West Bengal state secretariat. The protests have been driven by outrage over the horrific crime, and Banerjee’s call for legislative action is aimed at addressing what he sees as a broken justice system.

As the protests continue, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is beginning to return to normal, with patient numbers exceeding 1,000.
