Amid widespread protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Jawhar Sircar has resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat, citing dissatisfaction with the state government’s handling of the case. In a letter to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, Sircar expressed frustration with both the response to the tragedy and corruption within the party.

Sircar criticized the party for allowing a “favoured few” to dominate, accusing corrupt officials of securing top positions. “I cannot tolerate certain things, such as corrupt officers (or doctors) being rewarded with prime postings,” Sircar wrote.

Reflecting on the Kolkata rape-murder case, Sircar stated he had “suffered patiently” for a month, hoping Banerjee would personally intervene with the agitating junior doctors, as she had done in the past. However, he lamented that the government’s current actions were “too little and too late.”
