West Bengal Police, on Tuesday, constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of a student in Aliah University in the state.
The investigation will be headed by the Additional Director General of Police of CID Gyanwant Singh. Further, SIT will submit its report within 15 days, the official order by the West Bengal government stated.
Days after protests erupted over the death of the student from Aliah University, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday gave the direction for the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Director-General of Police.
Anis Khan, a student of Aliah University, was found dead outside his home in Howrah’s Amta area on Friday night.
His parents have alleged that he was thrown off the roof of the building by four police officers, who had come to search for their son. The police, however, have denied the allegations.
Addressing a public gathering in Howrah, Banerjee said, “I have asked for an SIT headed by DG, with the report within 15 days. A thorough enquiry will be done and culprits will be punished.”
The Chief Minister requested people to not fall prey to misinformation on the matter.
Anis Khan’s father Salem Khan refused to talk to the investigating officers even though they went to his house. On the same day, members of the SIT, DIG (CID Operations) Miraj Khalid and Dhruvajyoti Dey, Joint Commissioner of Police, Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, visited their house. They wanted to speak to Anis’s father and wanted to know their side of the story. However, Anis’s father said he would not talk to the state police. He wants to talk to the CBI, he said.
The members of the SIT went to Amta police station on Monday night to investigate the incident. An ASI, a constable, was later suspended by the administration on charges of negligence of duty and for abusing Anis’s family. Then on Tuesday, the members of the seat went to Anis’s house.
Anis’s father said, “I do not trust the administration. On Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee summoned Anis’s family to Nabanna. We demand that Mamata Banerjee come to our house if she can because Anis’s father is ill.”
The demand for CBI investigation is getting stronger. Anis’s neighbors are making the same demand. Anis’s father said that he was not satisfied with the suspension of the three policemen. Anis’s father said: “The police killed him. So only CBI can investigate.”
