After the Delta variant which led to higher mortality and morbidity rates, now Omicron is spreading fear among people.

Omicron was first identified in South Africa and is declared as a ‘variant of concern,’ by the WHO. In the Omicron variant, a lot of mutations are noticed in spike proteins. Are you aware? There are around 32 mutations that are seen in this bothersome variant. So, the shape of spike protein has changed now, and this variant is highly infectious. But, as per initial clinical evidence available, this variant may not lead to severe illness. This variant has now made its way to India, and a majority of people are still not aware of its symptoms. It’s important to know the symptoms of the Omicron variant. The symptoms are slightly different from the delta variant. The patients may have sore throat, weakness, and body ache. As per the data available, a significant drop in oxygen levels or hospitalisation, or loss of smell and taste has not been reported due to this variant which was seen during the Delta variant.

Although research on Omicron is still at nascent stages and there is not much information available regarding it. Furthermore, so far the cases detected and reported in India and other countries tell that the symptoms are more like the common cold. Yes, many people may tend to confuse it with the common cold as there is no drop in SPO2 levels.
