Taiwan on Alert: Chinese Military Aircraft, Vessels Detected Nearby

The Ministry of National Defence in Taiwan has reported the detection of ten Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels in the vicinity of Taiwan from 6 am on Tuesday to 6 am on Wednesday. Additionally, the Taiwan MND monitored a Chinese balloon traversing the median line, 115 km northwest of Keelung, at 8:03 am local time on Tuesday, as per a report by Taiwan News.

The Ministry of National Defence in Taiwan reported that out of ten People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, two crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, and four entered the southwest corner of Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ).

In reaction to activities by the Chinese, Taiwan dispatched aircraft, naval vessels, and activated air defense missile systems to monitor the movements of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), as reported by Taiwan News.

The Chinese balloon, detected crossing the median line 115 km (62 NM) northwest of Keelung at 8:03 am, traveled northeast and vanished at 8:50 am (local time).

In a post on X, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said, “10 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. today. 6 of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s SW ADIZ. #ROCArmedForces have monitored the situation and employed appropriate forces to respond.”

In April, Taiwan has reported 57 instances each of detecting Chinese military aircraft and naval vessels. Since September 2020, China has escalated its gray zone tactics, marked by a rise in the presence of military aircraft and naval ships around Taiwan. According to a report by Taiwan News, gray zone tactics are “an effort or series of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that attempts to achieve one’s security objectives without resort to direct and sizable use of force.”

On April 9, the Ministry of National Defence of Taiwan reported detecting seven Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels in the vicinity of the nation from 6 am (local time) on Monday to 6 am (local time) on Tuesday.

In a post on X, Taiwan’s MND stated, “7 PLA aircraft and 5 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 4 of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s SW and eastern ADIZ.”
