The Supreme Court issued a notice to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar after it heard three petitions challenging his election to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.

Jaishankar had been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat in July 2019. In July 2020, three petitions were filed in the court against this election. The petitions raise questions on the counting system for the elections. Significantly, in May, the Supreme Court had agreed to hear all these petitions together, and has now sought an answer from Jaishankar in the case. In July last year, Home Minister Amit Shah and Smriti Irani had won the Lok Sabha elections, leaving two Rajya Sabha seats vacant in Gujarat, for which elections were held.
