Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, expressed the country’s interest in joining the BRICS grouping, highlighting its value after India’s inclusion. He mentioned Sri Lanka’s intent to approach India first when formally seeking BRICS membership.
Sabry stated, “We’ll pursue BRICS. The cabinet formed a sub-committee for recommendations. We seek multiple options, and BRICS, especially with India, is promising.” He emphasized reaching out to India for support in joining BRICS, noting his invitation to the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Russia.
Russia assumed BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2024, with the organization expanding to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, showcasing its increasing global influence.
Regarding high-level visits, Sabry mentioned Sri Lanka’s eagerness to host the Indian Prime Minister following President Wickremesinghe’s visit to India. He anticipated a visit with a robust business delegation to bolster bilateral ties.
President Wickremesinghe’s 2023 visit to India, at Prime Minister Modi’s invitation, strengthened bilateral relations under India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR. Discussions focused on mutual interests, enhancing connectivity, and cooperation across various sectors.
