Cricket Australia CEO, Todd Greenberg, wants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the BBL to secure Cricket Australia’s future. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, having retired from T20Is and Tests, are expected to tour Bangladesh in August and then Australia in October for a three-match ODI series.
Virat And Rohit’s Retirement
With speculation that they might retire after the 2027 ODI World Cup, Cricket Australia is planning a special farewell during their possible last visit to Australia. CEO Todd Greenberg said they want to honour the duo for their massive contribution to the sport.
Cricket Australia CEO On Indian Players In BBL
Greenberg also expressed interest in seeing Kohli and Rohit play in the Big Bash League (BBL), although current BCCI rules prevent Indian players from participating in overseas leagues unless they end ties with the board.
Greenberg said Cricket Australia will continue discussions with the BCCI and hopes that Indian cricketers might one day feature in the BBL. Todd Greenberg emphasised that including Indian stars like Kohli would boost interest and viewership and that adapting to global trends in T20 leagues is essential for the future of Australian cricket.
International leagues are becoming more interested despite the BCCI’s strong position. Every league wants to gain traction, and they are aware that showcasing elite Indian talent will increase their appeal on a global scale. The IPL, PSL, and SA20 are just a few of the franchise leagues that have fiercely competed with the BBL.
In addition to drawing huge Indian audiences, bringing in legendary players like Kohli and Sharma would give young Australian athletes the chance to pick up tips from more seasoned players.
