Vaibhav Suryavanshi Was Just a Fan in 2017—Last Night, He Made IPL History

In a stunning twist of fate at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi made it into IPL folklore by hammering an astonishing 101 off a mere 38 deliveries. His sizzling knock drove Rajasthan Royals to a thrilling victory over Gujarat Titans, making him an overnight sensation as the youngest man to register the quickest T20 century.

After the match, a touching throwback picture of Vaibhav at the age of seven went viral. The photo, taken during an IPL 2017 match, is of the young supporter cheering in the stands in a Rising Pune Supergiant jersey with ‘RPS’ painted on his cheeks. Today, eight years later, the same kid has become a star performer for the Rajasthan Royals.

Rajasthan Royals and Their Talent Legacy

Rajasthan Royals, the 2008 inaugural IPL champions, have been renowned for developing young cricketing stars for years. The franchise signed Suryavanshi for Rs 1.1 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction, and their bet paid off in style. Batting coach Vikram Rathore, who had spotted Suryavanshi’s raw talent months ago, believed in his potential.

Ex-IPL player and Rising Pune Supergiant hero expressed his emotional response on social media, writing, “Last night I watched in awe… this morning I came across this photo of 6-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi cheering for my then team, Rising Pune Supergiant, in 2017.”

Record Broken, History Made

Moreover, Suryavanshi’s fearless strokeplay stunned Gujarat’s top bowlers—including Rashid Khan, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, Karim Janat, Mohammed Siraj, and Sai Kishore—who, until then, had led the team to six wins in nine games this season.

Yusuf Pathan, the former record holder for the quickest IPL century by an Indian (37 balls in 2010), wished the young lad, tweeting: “Even more special to see it happen while playing for ( rajasthanroyals ), just like I did. There’s truly something magical about this franchise for youngsters.”
