In what he termed a “bittersweet” experience, Neeraj Chopra at last crossed the much-awaited 90-metre mark at the Doha Diamond League, but had to be content with a second-placed finish. Though the achievement will go down in history books, Chopra’s 90.23m mark was not enough for the win. Germany’s Julian Weber bettered it with a 91.06m throw in his final attempt.
Historic Throw of Neeraj Chopra, But Not the Win
The 27-year-old Indian, who is now the third Asian and the 25th thrower in the world to reach 90m in the javelin throw, was at his best on the third attempt. “I am very happy with the 90m mark but it’s a little bit of a bittersweet experience actually,” Neeraj Chopra conceded after the event.

Julian Weber, who had his first 90 m-plus throw, lauded Chopra’s performance as he enjoyed his season-leading world throw. “It was nice today. Neeraj threw his very first 90m plus, and I eclipsed the mark in my final throw, and that was just perfect,” Weber said.
Injuries Behind, Bigger Goals Ahead
Chopra said that persistent groin aches over the years have kept him from accomplishing his potential. With the injury almost cured and training under the great Jan Zelezny since February, Chopra is better placed than ever.
“I used to feel something in my groin for the past few years. I feel better this year… so I think I can throw over 90m in the events this year until the World Championships,” Chopra stated. The World Championships will be held in Tokyo from September 13-21.
Zelezny’s Impact and Future Plans
Having begun formal employment with Zelezny himself only this year, Chopra admits there’s a lot more to work on. “He does not usually attend the Diamond Leagues, but he did so with me because he told me today is the day to reach 90m,” he said.
Though he came in second, Chopra is still concentrating. “My next target is still 90m. I feel I am ready to throw further. It’s just the start of a long season.”
Mutual Respect Among Rivals
Both Chopra and Weber shared mutual respect and pride at last achieving the mark. “I also told Julian that we can throw 90m. I am also pleased for him,” Chopra stated.
As the season progresses, viewers can anticipate even more impressive distances from India’s golden javelin star.
