Tejas Shirse Establishes New National Record in Men’s Hurdles, Misses Olympic Qualification Mark by 0.14 Seconds

Tejas Shirse, an Indian athlete, achieved a new national record in the men’s 110m hurdles at the Motonet GP Jyvaskyla athletics meet in Finland. Despite his remarkable performance with a time of 13.41 seconds in the finals, he narrowly missed the Olympic qualification mark of 13.27 seconds by just 0.14 seconds. This accomplishment surpasses the previous national record of 13.48 seconds set by Siddhanth Thingalaya in 2017. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) praised Shirse’s achievement on social media, highlighting his outstanding performance and encouraging him to continue striving for the Olympic qualification.

In a parallel development, Jyothi Yarraji, the Asian Games silver medalist, secured victory in the women’s 100m event at the Finland meet. She equaled her national record and personal best time of 12.78 seconds. Despite her impressive performance, she narrowly missed the Olympic qualification mark by 0.01 seconds. This isn’t the first time she’s faced such a scenario; she previously missed the mark during the World University Games in Chengdu last year by the same margin.

With the qualification period for the Paris 2024 Olympics ending on June 30, both athletes are determined to continue their pursuit of excellence in hopes of securing a spot in the prestigious event.
