India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour, dropped a significant hint regarding Rishabh Pant’s potential retention in the number three position in the batting lineup. During India’s T20 World Cup opener against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, there was notable intrigue surrounding India’s batting configuration. Departing from their usual opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Virat Kohli partnered with the seasoned Rohit Sharma at the top.
This unexpected change led to speculation that Suryakumar Yadav would follow, but it was Rishabh Pant who emerged to bat at number three, ultimately securing victory for the team. Post-match, Rathour suggested that Pant might continue in this role, citing the advantage of establishing a left-right batting combination. “Yes, he has been batting really well,” Rathour commented in the press conference. “The two games he has played, he has looked really, really good. So yes, at the moment, he is our number three, and it helps that he is the left-hander.”
Pant made his return to international cricket following a life-threatening accident in December 2022, facing challenges with the pitch’s bounce and sustaining blows to his arm. Nonetheless, the left-handed batsman showcased exceptional form, notably scoring an unbeaten 36 off 26 deliveries, including three boundaries and two sixes. His second six was particularly remarkable, demonstrating his skill with an effortless reverse scoop of a length delivery over the wicketkeeper’s head.
Pant’s contribution was pivotal as India comfortably chased down a modest target of 97 with more than seven overs to spare, securing an eight-wicket victory. With this win, India gears up to face their arch-rivals, Pakistan, in their upcoming match on Sunday.
