The playoff war in the IPL 2025 saw a dramatic twist as rain ruined the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC) clash at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, awarding a point to both teams and impacting the qualification prospects of several others.
SRH Officially Knocked Out Despite Cummins’ Heroics
Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad had put on a dominating bowling show earlier in the night. Cummins himself had hit three times, which helped limit DC to only 133 runs. SRH was looking on course for a badly needed victory, which would have kept their hopes alive for a playoff spot.
But heavy rain during the second innings after the first innings halted play. The washout officially eliminated SRH from playoff contention, ending their season hopes.
IPL 2025 Points Table After SRH-DC Washout
DC Gain Crucial Point, Stay in Playoff Hunt
Delhi Capitals gained from the result, having been on the brink of a third successive loss. The joint points took them to 13, remaining fifth on the standings and improving their chances of a playoff spot.
Consequences of the Washout for Other Franchises
The washed-out match rearranged the playoff calculus, essentially sending three teams out of contention while leaving seven in the running.
Setback for PBKS and KKR
Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), both of whom had earlier shared points in a rain-marred encounter at Eden Gardens, now have a more complex route to the playoffs. They were earlier less impacted by Net Run Rate (NRR) as they were on odd points, but the washout alters that. Now, qualification for them could also depend on the margins of their wins and losses from their remaining encounters.
Boost for MI, RCB, GT, and LSG
Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are in a better spot. These teams, all being already on even points, get an advantage of not having to account for NRR calculations against teams on uneven points such as PBKS and KKR. Their in-group competition continues.
Missed Opportunity for Other Playoff Contenders
Washout also spared Delhi Capitals, who were backpedaling for most of the game, an actual loss. A loss would have helped other playoff contenders because it would have cut down on DC’s upper limit of possible points and relegated SRH into contention only with a 14-point finish.
With SRH eliminated, now DC remain a threat for the championship chase, and with that, upcoming games become ever more important to all the strong contenders.
