Serena’s achilles heel puts her out of French Open

Twenty three-time grand slam champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from the ongoing French Open due to achilles injury.Williams, bidding for her 24th Grand Slam title, announced her withdrawal ahead of her secondround match against Tsvetana Pironkova slated to be played on Wednesday.

“I really wanted to give an effort here. It’s my achilles that didn’t have enough to properly heal after the Open. I was able to get it somewhat better, but just looking long-term in this tournament, will I be able to get through enough matches? For me, I don’t think I could,” the 39-year-old told a news conference as per the WTA website.
