PM Modi Hails Ashwin’s Legacy, Wishes Him a Bright Future After Retirement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s veteran off-spinner, for his outstanding 14-year international career. Ashwin, one of Indian cricket’s greatest match-winners, surprised everyone by announcing his retirement right after the Brisbane Test against Australia ended in a draw.

In his heartfelt letter, PM Modi praised Ashwin’s unique ability to outsmart batsmen with his off-spin and creative variations. Furthermore, he highlighted Ashwin’s dedication to the team, recalling how he displayed sincerity and composure during tough situations. Modi also noted that Ashwin’s iconic jersey number 99 would be “sorely missed” by both fans and teammates.

At the age of 38, Ashwin retired with an impressive record of 537 Test wickets at an average of 24. Additionally, he scored 3,503 runs, including six centuries. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), he took 156 wickets, and in T20 Internationals (T20Is), he claimed 72 wickets.

Ashwin’s Retirement: A Surprising Twist

PM Modi compared Ashwin’s retirement announcement to a surprise carrom ball, which shocked everyone.

“The announcement of your retirement surprised fans in India and around the world. At a time when everyone expected more off-breaks, you bowled a carrom ball that bowled everyone,” Modi wrote.

However, Modi added, “We understand this must have been a tough decision, especially after your incredible career playing for India.”

Acknowledging Ashwin’s Family and Future

In addition, PM Modi acknowledged the crucial support from Ashwin’s family. He recognized the role played by his wife, Prithi, their daughters, and his parents in his success. Modi wished Ashwin a fulfilling future, filled with more time for his loved ones and continued contributions to the sport.

“May you continue to contribute to the game you love. Congratulations on a stellar career, and best wishes for the future,” PM Modi concluded.
