India’s spectacular performance in athletics continued as Parul Chaudhary and Priti secured silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase at the ongoing Asian Games on Monday.
Parul achieved her personal best timing of 9:27.63s to secure a podium finish, with Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile setting the Asian Games record with a timing of 9:18.28s. On the other hand, Priti achieved her personal best timing of 9:43.32s to earn the bronze medal.
On Sunday, India had a highly successful day, winning a total of 15 medals, with 9 of them coming from athletics alone. Track and field athlete Avinash Sable shattered the Asian Games record as he comfortably secured India’s first men’s 3000m steeplechase gold medal at the continental meet. Tajinderpal Singh Toor defended his men’s shot put crown in Hangzhou with his sixth and final attempt, achieving a distance of 20.36m.
Harmilan Bains claimed silver in the women’s 1500m, while Murali Sreeshankar missed the gold in men’s long jump and settled for silver by falling short by just 0.03 seconds. His second-place finish saw him achieve a distance of 8.19 meters, surpassed only by China’s Wang Jianan with 8.22m. Ajay Kumar Saroj and Jinson Johnson secured the second and third positions in the men’s 1500m.
