Paris Passes the Torch: Will Los Angeles Shine Brighter at the 2028 Olympics?

“Au revoir les jeux!” always sounds a bit more charming in French. The past 19 days of the Paris 2024 Olympics have felt particularly soft and joyful, culminating in a closing ceremony that beautifully echoed the spirit of the Summer Games. The final act was a vibrant display, reflecting the Games’ stunning and cloudless nature.

The closing ceremony was a colourful celebration, fittingly marking the end of Paris’s century-long wait to host the Games again. Traditionally, closing ceremonies can feel excessive, but this one felt genuinely heartfelt, with everyone eager to bid farewell.

The ceremony also marked the beginning of a new chapter, as Paris passed the torch to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. Represented by a mix of US political figures and celebrities, including Tom Cruise, who made a memorable appearance by descending from the stadium roof, Los Angeles faces the challenge of following Paris’s remarkable example.

Paris 2024 has set a high bar with its vivid and immersive Games, showcasing the city’s landmarks and emotional resonance. Los Angeles will need to deliver a blend of beauty and allure, drawing on its own strengths, including Hollywood and technological innovation.

The Stade de France, still warm at 30°C, hosted the event with a mix of lively performances and moments of chaos, such as athletes briefly storming the stage. Highlights included a stunning outdoor performance by Zaho de Sagazan and appearances by Emmanuel Macron and Thomas Bach. Despite some lengthy and chaotic segments, the ceremony was a celebration of the Games’ success.

Tom Cruise’s dramatic finale, involving a wire descent and a motorbike ride with the Olympic flag, was a memorable touch. Although some parts of his stunt were pre-recorded, the overall spectacle, including the Hollywood sign and Olympic rings, was impressive.

As the Olympic flame passed to Los Angeles, it symbolized the ongoing tradition of the Games. With Paris 2024 setting a high standard, LA 2028 will have to showcase its own unique charm while building on the legacy of its predecessor. The 2024 Games in Paris demonstrated a successful blend of grandeur and practical achievements, leaving a lasting impression as the world looks forward to the next chapter in Los Angeles.
