Paris Olympics 2024: India Aims To Break Its Olympic Record

The Tokyo Olympics marked a significant milestone for India, with the nation securing seven medals, surpassing its previous best tally of six medals from the 2012 London Olympics.

Historic Wins in Tokyo

Neeraj Chopra’s gold in men’s javelin was a historic first for India in track and field events. The Indian men’s hockey team ended a 41-year wait for an Olympic medal, winning bronze in a thrilling match against Germany. PV Sindhu made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win medals at two consecutive Olympics. Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya added to India’s proud legacy in wrestling, while Lovlina Borgohain became the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal.

Looking Ahead to Paris

As the Paris Olympics approach, all of India’s medalists from Tokyo, except the wrestlers, are expected to compete. Indian fans are hopeful but cautious, recalling the disappointment at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where the country failed to build on the success of London 2012.

Potential Medal Contenders

Neeraj Chopra is a standout, entering the Paris Games as the reigning Olympic, Asian, and World champion in men’s javelin. His focus on fitness over competition has made him a favorite for another gold. PV Sindhu, despite recent struggles, remains a top contender due to her track record in major tournaments. Star badminton players Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy are also good bets for a medal in men’s doubles badminton.

In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen are serious contenders, with Nikhat already a two-time world champion. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won silver in Tokyo, is also in the running for another medal.

Shooting for Success

Indian shooters are looking to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance in Tokyo. Manu Bhaker, competing in multiple events, has shown promise, and 23-year-old Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will represent India’s hopes in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions.

Hockey Hopes

The men’s hockey team, after a bronze finish in Tokyo, aims to improve their standing despite recent challenges. Under new coach Craig Fulton, the team has strengthened its defense, securing gold at the 2022 Asian Games. However, a tough group stage in Paris, including top-ranked teams, will test their mettle.

India enters the Paris Olympics with a blend of hope and caution, aiming to build on the historic success of Tokyo. With seasoned athletes and promising new talents, the nation is poised to make a strong impact on the global stage.
