Novak Djokovic handed hefty fine for shattering racquet during Wimbledon final

The most accomplished men’s tennis player of the Open Era, Novak Djokovic, lost to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the 2023 Wimbledon final on Sunday, failing to win his 24th Grand Slam title.

Djokovic lost control many times in the dramatic match that went to the fifth set. The Serbian smashed his racquet on the net post after breaking Alcaraz’s serve and losing his own service game. The Serbian star was punished severely for his behaviour after being accused of ‘racquet abuse.’

Djokovic received a warning from umpire Fergus Murphy after shattering his racket into the net post and smashing it. The Serb was later handed a big fine of USD 8,000 for his avoidable actions. According to reports, this fine sets a “record” for 2023.

Djokovic was quite kind, accepted defeat gracefully, and praised Alcaraz’s stunning performance. Later, he compared him to Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and himself (Novak).

“I believe that throughout the past year or so, people have discussed how his game incorporates characteristics from Roger, Rafa, and myself. I’d concur with that. I believe he essentially has the best of all three worlds,” Djokovic said.

When Djokovic won his first major at the Australian Open in 2008, Alcaraz was still three months shy of his fifth birthday.
