Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) lifted the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 Cup with a 2-1 win over Bengaluru FC (BFC) in a high-intensity final held at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday night. The win helped them complete a historic League Double, having already secured the ISL Shield earlier this season. They also remained unbeaten at home throughout the campaign.
This feat makes MBSG only the second club in ISL history—after Mumbai City FC in the 2020-21 season—to win both the League Shield and the ISL Cup in the same year.
Strong Start in Front of Home Crowd
Backed by their passionate fans, MBSG started the match with intensity. In the ninth minute, Jamie Maclaren came close to scoring with a right-footed shot from inside the box. However, Bengaluru goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu dived low to his left and made the save.
MBSG continued to build pressure. Midfielder Anirudh Thapa made a penetrating run into the box and attempted a shot from the left, but the effort was blocked in time by the BFC defence.
Bengaluru Strike First with an Own Goal
Around the 20-minute mark, Bengaluru FC began to find their rhythm. Alberto Noguera delivered a promising cross to Sunil Chhetri, but the veteran forward missed the chance. Soon after, Edgar Mendez’s header was safely collected by MBSG keeper Vishal Kaith.
Bengaluru took the lead early in the second half. In the 49th minute, BFC winger Williams sent in a curling cross from the right. Defender Subhasish Bose failed to stop the delivery, and MBSG’s Alberto Rodriguez, trying to clear the ball, accidentally scored an own goal.
MBSG Bounce Back with Penalty Equaliser
Seven minutes later, Bose tried to make up for his earlier mistake by intercepting the ball near the halfway line. He quickly passed it to Jason Cummings, who fired a powerful left-footed shot. Sandhu made a diving save to deny the equaliser.
However, in the 72nd minute, MBSG were awarded a penalty after Chinglensana Singh committed a handball. Cummings stepped up confidently and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, levelling the score.
Extra Time Brings Decisive Moment
As the match moved into extra time, MBSG kept pushing forward. In the 96th minute, Maclaren made the most of a loose ball in the box. With the Bengaluru defence struggling, he quickly struck with a powerful shot that beat Sandhu and found the back of the net. That goal turned out to be the match-winner and secured the ISL Cup for the Kolkata side.
Maclaren played a key role in the final, completing 10 out of 11 passes and scoring the winning goal.
