Mitchell Marsh Explains Why IPL is the ‘Best Competition in the World’

Mitchell Marsh, the top-order batter for Lucknow Super Giants, praised the Indian Premier League’s competitive nature. He said the IPL is the best league in the world because on any given day, any team can win.

Marsh Powers LSG to Strong Win

To begin with, Lucknow Super Giants defeated Gujarat Titans by 33 runs. This result hurt Gujarat’s chances of finishing first in the group. The match took place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s home ground.

Marsh led the charge with a powerful hundred. Alongside him, Nicholas Pooran added an unbeaten 56. As a result, LSG posted a huge total of 235/2.

Initially, Gujarat got off to a decent start. However, they collapsed after losing three key players — Sai Sudharsan, captain Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler.

Victory Comes Too Late for LSG

Despite the win, LSG moved only to sixth place. However, the points didn’t help their playoff hopes. By this point, the top four teams had already qualified.

Later, Marsh reflected on their campaign. He said missed chances in tight games cost them.

“It’s been very disappointing. We lost close games, and we are out of the race. The IPL is a beast of a competition. Any team can beat any team in this competition on a given day; that’s why this is the best competition in the world,” Marsh said during the post-match presentation. He was named Player of the Match.

Marsh Finally Gets His IPL Hundred

Notably, Marsh scored 117 off 64 balls. He became the first overseas player to hit a century in this IPL season. It was also his first IPL hundred after more than a decade.

“I have had a few years off in between as well (on finally getting his first IPL hundred). First played for the Deccan Chargers in 2010. It’s been a while. Getting an opportunity to open the batting. The partnership with Aiden on and off the field has been amazing. Came to the IPL pretty fresh. They (GT) bowled really well in the powerplay. If you are 12 off 12 in the powerplay, it’s panic stations, but once we got a few good partnerships, it made things easy for us,” he added.

LSG’s Win Opens Doors for Others

Meanwhile, LSG’s victory gave hope to other teams. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians can now push Gujarat down. If these teams win their last group matches, Gujarat might lose their top position.
