The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has suspended former India pacer S Sreesanth for a period of three years over alleged defamatory and misleading comments made against the association. The action stems from remarks he made in connection with the controversy surrounding Sanju Samson’s exclusion from India’s Champions Trophy squad.
In a statement, the KCA confirmed that the decision was taken during a special General Body meeting held in Kochi on April 30. Sreesanth, who is also a co-owner of Kollam Aeries, a franchise team in the Kerala Cricket League, had reportedly made these statements during a Malayalam TV panel discussion.
Show-Cause Notice Issued Before Suspension
Earlier, the KCA had served show-cause notices to Sreesanth and several franchise teams including Kollam Aeries, Alappuzha Team Lead, and Alappuzha Ripples. While the teams provided what the KCA deemed satisfactory responses, Sreesanth’s comments were viewed as defamatory and in violation of the association’s code of conduct.
“Since the franchise teams gave satisfactory responses to the notices, no further action will be taken against them. However, the meeting decided to advise greater caution when appointing members to team management,” the KCA said.
KCA to Seek Compensation from Sanju Samson’s Father
In a further move, the KCA General Body also resolved to file a compensation claim against Sanju Samson’s father, Samson Vishwanath, and two other individuals. The association accused them of making baseless allegations using Samson’s name.
KCA Clarifies Suspension Is Not Over Support for Samson
Sreesanth, who played a key role in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup victories, allegedly voiced strong support for Sanju Samson during the TV discussion. He also criticized the KCA and pledged to protect Kerala players.
The KCA clarified that the notice to Sreesanth was not issued for backing Samson, but rather for allegedly making defamatory remarks targeting the state cricket body.
Remarks Tied to Samson’s Exclusion from Kerala Squad
Sreesanth’s comments came amid widespread backlash against the KCA for dropping Samson from the Kerala team during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Many believe this decision adversely impacted Samson’s selection for India’s Champions Trophy squad.
