Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has been fined Rs 12 lakh for having a slow over rate in Match No. 9 of IPL 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The fine was levied as it was the team’s inaugural offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for minimum over-rate offences.
This fine marks the first slow over-rate penalty of the IPL 2025 season. The officials confirmed the punishment after Mumbai Indians suffered a 36-run defeat to Gujarat Titans.
Carry-Over Penalty from IPL 2024
Hardik Pandya had previously been suspended for a slow over-rate breach during the IPL 2024 season. He thus sat out for Mumbai Indians’ first game of IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings. MI went on to lose that match by four wickets, further complicating their campaign.
Addressing the issue of carry-over penalties, Pandya commented during a Mumbai Indians press conference, “That is out of my control. Last year what occurred is a part of the sport. What happened is that we bowled the last over 2-2.5 minutes late.”
He further added, “At that time, I was not aware of the consequences. It was unfortunate but rules say it so I have to go with the process. Whether the penalty should continue in the next season or not, it is on the higher authorities.”
IPL’s Revised Code of Conduct for 2025
The IPL governing body has enacted stricter rules on slow over-rates this season. According to a recent BCCI release, “Effective this season, a new Code of Conduct will be introduced from the TATA IPL 2025 season, with a demerit points system and suspension points that will be valid for 36 months.”
The decision is intended to provide improved time management during games, curtailing delays in innings and keeping the nature of the tournament quick-paced.
Mumbai Indians’ Misfortunes in IPL 2025
After losing to Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians stand at ninth position on the table with no points. They still haven’t won a match in the tournament.
Their next game will be against Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, March 31. With pressure building up, Pandya and his unit will have to get together in a hurry to right the course of their season.
