IPL 2025 Final: Former UK PM Rishi Sunak Cheers for RCB, Sits with Jay Shah

In a high-profile visit that highlighted the worldwide prominence of the Indian Premier League, former United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was seen watching the IPL 2025 Final, sitting next to ICC Chairman Jay Shah. The two were observed engaged in a light chat as the highly anticipated standoff between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) unfolded at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Sunak’s appearance in the stands caused a buzz everywhere in the cricketing world and on social media, particularly among fans who are accustomed to seeing political and cricketing bigwigs come together only every now and then. Looking elegant in a sharp, informal gear, Sunak was seen to be at ease and involved, basking in the charged environment of one of the most happening events on the world cricket calendar.

Devotion of Rishi Sunak towards RCB and English Players

A self-confessed cricket fan, Sunak has often spoken about his love for the sport and how much of an embedded cultural part of the Indian diaspora in the UK it is. But tonight, he wasn’t merely the sport’s fan he was fervently supporting one side.

Former UK Prime Minister is a huge fan of Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Speaking ahead of the final, Sunak said, “I’m backing Virat Kohli all the way.” He continued, “But I’m also hoping for a big contribution from RCB’s English contingent Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone let’s bring it home.” His comments reflected not only his admiration for the Indian superstar but also his excitement to see the English players shine on such a grand stage as Bengaluru looked to clinch their maiden IPL title.

A Moment of Sporting Diplomacy

Jay Shah, who is at present in charge at both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), was observed greeting warmly with Sunak. Shah has done much to raise the profile of the IPL worldwide, forging international alliances and spreading the influence of the league far beyond Indian waters.

Although the meeting seemed casual, the symbolism was considerable. The common background of a previous British Prime Minister and the sport’s highest international administrator led to speculation about possible collaboration between cricket boards, potential ICC activity in the UK, and attempts to more globalize the sport.
