Indian Super League 2024-25: Odisha FC Battles Back to Hold NorthEast United FC in 2-2 Draw

NorthEast United FC and Odisha FC battled to an exciting 2-2 draw at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar during the Indian Super League 2024-25 season in February. Although Alaaeddine Ajaraie scored twice, NorthEast United FC could not hold on to their lead. Meanwhile, Odisha FC responded with crucial goals from Thoiba Singh and Isak Vanlalruatfela to secure a point. As a result, NorthEast United FC has now dropped 17 points from winning positions this season. Nevertheless, Ajaraie’s brace took his season tally to 18 goals, equaling the ISL record set by Ferran Corominas (2017-18) and Bartholomew Ogbeche (2021-22).

Early Chances and Missed Opportunities

At first, the match started slowly, but soon, the intensity picked up after the first quarter. Odisha FC had a golden chance to take the lead when Diego Mauricio skillfully entered the box and set up Jerry Mawihmingthanga. However, Jerry misfired, missing a clear scoring opportunity.

Just a minute later, Rahul KP made an impressive run down the right flank and forced a strong save from NorthEast United FC’s goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh. Consequently, Odisha FC gained momentum and put pressure on the Highlanders’ defense.

Meanwhile, both teams created half-chances but struggled to break the deadlock. Right before the drinks break, NorthEast United FC had their best opportunity. Macarton Nickson played a precise pass to Jithin MS on the right. Then, Jithin squared the ball to Nestor Albiach, who prepared to strike. However, Odisha FC’s Mourtada Fall executed a brilliant tackle at the last moment to deny him.

Second-Half Action and Goals

As the second half began, both teams pushed forward and created plenty of chances. However, they lacked the finishing touch. Odisha FC’s Hugo Boumous and Isak Vanlalruatfela came close, while NorthEast United FC’s Michel Zabaco and Nestor also missed key opportunities.

Finally, in the 67th minute, NorthEast United FC found the breakthrough. Redeem Tlang played a short corner to Buanthanglun Samte, who delivered a perfect cross into the box. At the far post, Ajaraie finished with precision, scoring his 17th goal of the season.

However, NorthEast United FC’s lead did not last long. In the 78th minute, Odisha FC responded quickly. Isak Vanlalruatfela sent a pinpoint cross from the left, and Thoiba Singh took full advantage, beating Gurmeet Singh to level the score.

Late Drama and Last-Minute Equaliser

In an attempt to regain control, NorthEast United FC coach Juan Pedro Benali substituted Jithin MS with Parthib Gogoi in the 80th minute. Shortly after, in the 83rd minute, Ajaraie struck again. This time, he made a clever run and connected perfectly with a free-kick from Nestor, heading the ball past Amrinder Singh to restore NorthEast United FC’s lead.

In response, Odisha FC coach Sergio Lobera introduced Dorielton Gomes, while Benali brought in Hamza Regragui to defend the lead. However, the drama was not over yet. In stoppage time (90+3’), Odisha FC struck again. Isak and Mauricio combined brilliantly, and Isak curled a shot into the bottom left corner to make it 2-2.

After the equalizer, there was barely any time left, forcing both teams to settle for a draw.

Key Performer of the Match

Ajaraie played a crucial role for NorthEast United FC. He scored two brilliant goals, created three chances, and contributed defensively with two clearances.
