Indian Super League 2024-25: NorthEast United FC and FC Goa Settle for 1-1 Draw in Thriller

NorthEast United FC staged a late comeback to secure a 1-1 draw against FC Goa in Guwahati on Tuesday. The thrilling encounter in the Indian Super League 2024-25 saw Mohammad Yasir give FC Goa the lead, while Jithin MS struck the equalizer for the Highlanders in the 76th minute. Notably, this marked the 11th draw between the two sides, the highest in ISL history.

Highlanders Take Control Early

At the start, NorthEast United FC dominated possession. Guillermo Fernandez and Alaaeddine Ajaraie consistently threatened FC Goa’s defense with their quick runs. However, the first major chance fell to the Gaurs. Dejan Drazic delivered a perfect cross to Armando Sadiku, but the Albanian’s weak header was comfortably saved by Gurmeet Singh.

Soon after, Ajaraie had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring. Buanthanglun Samte’s long pass found him in space, yet Hritik Tiwari tipped his shot over the crossbar. Meanwhile, Samte exploited gaps on the right flank, sending in multiple crosses. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, their forwards struggled to finish.

FC Goa Respond Strongly

Despite being under pressure for much of the first half, FC Goa regained momentum toward the end. They controlled the midfield and created promising opportunities. For example, Brison Fernandes nearly scored, skillfully losing his marker before his shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Intensity Builds in the Second Half

After halftime, NorthEast United maintained their attacking intent. However, their efforts lacked precision in the final third. Recognizing this, assistant coach Naushad Moosa made substitutions in the 59th minute. He introduced Nestor Albiach and Ninthoinganba Meetei, hoping to change the game’s dynamics. Although Nestor almost combined effectively with Ajaraie, Odei Onaindia cleared the danger at a critical moment.

FC Goa Break the Deadlock

Against the run of play, FC Goa took the lead in the 65th minute. Jay Gupta launched a long ball into the penalty area. Yasir skillfully controlled it, exchanged a quick one-two with Brison Fernandes, and smashed the ball into the bottom corner. This unexpected goal put Goa ahead.

Highlanders Fight Back

Determined to equalize, NorthEast United intensified their attacks. They relied on long balls, but Goa’s defensive duo of Odei Onaindia and Sandesh Jhingan cleared everything with ease. However, the Highlanders adjusted their strategy. In the 76th minute, Ajaraie held the ball brilliantly before threading a perfect pass to Jithin MS. Jithin calmly slotted the ball past Tiwari, bringing the hosts level.

Final Quarter Action

After conceding, Goa made changes to their lineup, bringing on Iker Guarrotxena and Ayush Chhetri for added energy. Both teams pushed hard in the closing stages, creating a few half-chances. Nevertheless, neither side could find a winner, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Key Performer: Carl McHugh

Carl McHugh was a standout player for FC Goa. He dominated the midfield, making three clearances, five tackles, and two interceptions. Additionally, he completed 31 out of 47 passes, demonstrating his importance in controlling the game.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, NorthEast United FC will face Kerala Blasters on January 18. Meanwhile, FC Goa will host East Bengal FC on January 19. Both teams will aim to build on their performances and secure vital points in their upcoming fixtures.
