Hybrid Model Unveiled: India, Pakistan To Avoid Hosting Each Other In ICC Tournaments Until 2027

The Champions Trophy 2025 is uncertain as India has declined to visit Pakistan due to security issues. As reported by the Times of India, both the BCCI and PCB have chosen not to host each other until 2027, worsening existing tensions.

ICC Meeting to Determine Tournament’s Future

The ICC has arranged a meeting on December 7 to discuss the Champions Trophy’s destiny. Pakistan, the assigned host, will explore alternatives, with an official announcement anticipated after discussions.

Key Implications of the Update

The Champions Trophy is scheduled for February-March 2025. While Pakistan had previously consented to a hybrid model, it insisted on reciprocity until 2031. The ICC has so far prolonged the hybrid model only until 2027.

Under this arrangement, matches between India and Pakistan will occur at neutral locations. For the Champions Trophy, the UAE is expected to host these matches.

Historical Context and Current Challenges

India has not visited Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, with the last bilateral series occurring in 2012. The current refusal to visit is linked to security worries, with the ICC stressing that member boards must follow government travel advisories.

Financial Stakes

A note from Star India points out the financial consequences. If India opts out, ICC members risk losing 90% of the $750 million media rights value. Conversely, Pakistan’s absence would lead to a financial impact of less than 10%.

Jay Shah’s Role as ICC Chief

This standoff represents one of the initial challenges for Jay Shah, who has recently taken on the ICC Chairmanship. In his remarks, Shah conveyed optimism regarding the future, stating: “Today has been both productive and inspiring. While I am encouraged by what I have seen, I recognize that this is just the beginning. The hard work to elevate cricket to unprecedented heights starts now, and I am confident that together, we will deliver on this vision. ”

This situation remains crucial, not only for cricketing relationships but also for the ICC’s financial and operational strategies.
