Gujarat Titans (GT) won comfortably by 36 runs over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 9 of the IPL 2025. Mumbai’s batting order faltered to chase down 197. Although there was some resistance in the middle order, a composed bowling performance from GT helped the team win its second match in the tournament.

At 20 overs, MI were dismissed for 160/6, 36 runs short of the target. With Mohammad Siraj at the helm during the death overs, GT’s bowling team denied MI any chance to score. Siraj allowed only 9 runs for the last over, effectively ending any possibility of a last-minute miracle.

Mitchell Santner, who was 18 off 9 balls without losing his wicket, over-turned an LBW on DRS as the ball pitched outside the leg stump. He then added a massive six down long-on but couldn’t take the game further with his acceleration. His partner, Naman Dhir, got 18* off 11 balls but couldn’t hit the boundaries when MI needed them to hit it.

Hardik Pandya Confesses Team’s Weaknesses

MI skipper Hardik Pandya acknowledged that his team was short of both bat and ball.

“Tough to put it together, I think in batting and bowling we were 15-20 runs short in both places. We were not professional in the field, we made basic errors and that cost us 20-25 runs and in a T20 game that is quite a lot. They (GT openers) batted brilliantly, only a couple of deliveries here and there. They were quite exceptional, they didn’t take many chances, they did the right stuff, they were able to get runs without playing many risky shots. We were doing catch-up since then. At the moment we all need to take responsibility, it’s early stage. Batters have to come to the party, hopefully they do that soon. On this wicket they (slower deliveries) were the toughest balls, some were shooting, some were bouncing, as batters it becomes difficult.”

Pandya also laid stress on taking responsibility as a team and asked the batsmen to deliver in future matches.

Sai Kishore on His Game and the Hardik Pandya Episode

GT’s left-arm bowler, Sai Kishore was key in holding MI back and afterwards clarified the altercation between him and Pandya.

“He’s a good friend of mine, inside the field it should be like that, but we don’t take things personally.”

As far as his bowling was concerned, Kishore mentioned that he had to alter his strategy:

“I wasn’t getting as much purchase today, so had to bowl defensively and had to do a job for the team. The pitch played better than it looked. (On Suryakumar Yadav) He played well, he swept all my good length balls. If someone plays a good shot, you have to credit the batter. I have to credit Shubman, he kept advising me on what to bowl to Surya since he’s seen him in the Indian nets.”

Gujarat Titans Bowlers Perform Under Pressure

GT bowlers exemplified their dominance and flexibility, never allowing MI to get a foothold. The win solidifies GT’s position in the tournament, with MI needing to re-strategize for future games.

Since both teams were looking to push for playoffs, future games will be important in determining their IPL 2025 season.
