Glenn Phillips has left the Gujarat Titans team. While the exact circumstances surrounding his sudden departure remain unclear, it is understood that the New Zealand all-rounder has suffered a groin injury.
Role in the Team and Recent Form of Glenn Phillips
The 28-year-old dynamic all-rounder, who was one of New Zealand’s star players in the Champions Trophy – where they were runners-up to India – was an easy choice for the franchise, which picked him up at his base price of Rs INR crore during the auction.
With his agility and acrobatic ability, the New Zealander made some breathtaking catches during the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai. It is believed that he injured himself during Gujarat Titans’ away game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6.
Lack of Game Time and Future Uncertainty for Glenn Phillips
Phillips has not played in any of the Titans’ games so far this season. There is no indication at this point as to whether the franchise will look for a direct replacement. With Shubman Gill’s team to play another away game against Lucknow SuperGiants on Saturday (April 12) afternoon – there was no comment available immediately from franchise officials.
Gujarat Titans put out a statement stating, “Glenn Phillips has gone back to New Zealand due to a groin strain suffered during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6. The Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a quick recovery.”
Gujarat Titans’ Foreign Player Woes
Phillips is the second foreign player from the Titans’ camp to be out. Kagiso Rabada went back to South Africa for a personal emergency, and there is no update as yet on when he will return to the team.
Up to this point, the Titans only have five foreign players in their squad Jos Buttler, Sherfane Rutherford, Rashid Khan, Gerald Coetzee, and Karim Janat. Each team can have a maximum of eight foreign players.
Titans, the 2023 season champions, are at the top of the IPL points table with four victories and eight points from five matches. The only game they lost this season was the season opener against Punjab Kings at home in Ahmedabad on March 25. They have since then enjoyed four back-to-back victories, against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, SunRisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.
