NEW DELHI: Team India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, spoke to the media on Monday, focusing on his relationship with star batsman Virat Kohli. He made it clear that their personal issues should not be a topic for TV ratings. Despite some past disagreements visible during their IPL matches, Gambhir and Kohli will now work together as part of the Indian cricket team.
Their first challenge together will be the tour of Sri Lanka, which starts on July 27 and includes T20 and ODI matches. Gambhir highlighted, “My relationship with Virat Kohli is private and not for TRP.”
On the topic of Kohli, Gambhir said, “We have had many discussions, and it’s natural for players to compete for their spots.”
Gambhir also highlighted the importance of managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload, especially after the retirement of senior players Rohit Sharma and Kohli from T20 Internationals. Sharma and Kohli retired from T20Is after India’s win in the T20 World Cup last November.
With these changes, Gambhir expects Sharma and Kohli to be available for most of the remaining games in the two formats they are still playing.
