Mumbai Indians’ (MI) newest pace sensation, Ashwani Kumar, had a dream debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The young fast bowler from Jhanjheri, Mohali, played a crucial role in MI’s victory. He delivered an outstanding spell, taking 4/24 in three overs, and helped restrict Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to just 116 runs.

Ashwani’s Emotional Moment

After his remarkable performance, Ashwani received the Player of the Match award. Understandably, he was emotional and grateful. “It is a big thing for me that I got this opportunity and that I am getting this award. Never thought about this, just did my process and happy (to get this award). I am from Jhanjheri in Mohali district – to come from there to here, that is the result of my hard work and by god’s grace, I am here,” he told ESPNcricinfo.

Right from the start, Ashwani made an impact. First, he dismissed KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane for 11. Then, gaining confidence, he removed Rinku Singh (17). Soon after, he cleaned up Manish Pandey (19) and Andre Russell (5), completing an incredible spell.

Despite his success, he admitted to feeling nervous before the match. “I was confident, but I was a little nervous as well, thinking about what will happen,” he shared.

Moreover, he had a heartfelt message for his supporters. “I want to make all of you feel proud in the upcoming games,” he added.

With this stunning performance, Ashwani Kumar has officially announced himself on the big stage.

MI Dominate KKR for First Victory

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians secured their first win of the season in style. They convincingly defeated defending champions KKR by eight wickets at Wankhede Stadium.

South African batter Ryan Rickelton played a crucial role in MI’s chase. He remained unbeaten on 62 off 41 balls, ensuring MI reached the 117-run target in just 12.5 overs.

A Commanding Chase

After back-to-back defeats against KKR last season, MI made a strong statement. Right from the start, Rickelton took charge, smashing four boundaries and five sixes.

Initially, Rohit Sharma and Rickelton provided MI with a solid start, adding 46 runs in 5.2 overs. However, Sharma fell for 13, dismissed by Andre Russell.

Then, Will Jacks joined Rickelton, and together they built a 45-run stand. Yet again, Russell made a breakthrough, dismissing Jacks for 16.

Afterward, Suryakumar Yadav came in and wasted no time. He played an explosive knock, scoring 27 runs off just nine balls. As a result, MI comfortably crossed the finish line, securing a dominant victory.

KKR’s Batting Struggles

On the other hand, KKR failed to build a competitive total. To begin with, Sunil Narine had a terrible game. He got out for a duck and later struggled with the ball, conceding 32 runs in three overs without taking a wicket.

Soon after, Deepak Chahar dismissed Quinton de Kock for just one run. Although KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi tried to fight back, their efforts didn’t last long. As fate would have it, Ashwani Kumar dismissed Rahane with his very first ball.

From that point onward, wickets kept tumbling. Hardik Pandya removed Raghuvanshi for 26. Later, Ashwani Kumar struck twice in one over, dismissing Rinku Singh (17) and Manish Pandey (19). Furthermore, he sent Andre Russell back to the pavilion for just 5.

As the innings progressed, Vignesh Puthur removed Harshit Rana for 4. Toward the end, Ramandeep Singh tried to fight back, smashing two sixes and a four. However, Mitchell Santner dismissed him for 22. Ultimately, Raghuvanshi ended up as KKR’s highest scorer.

MI’s Bowlers Seal the Deal

Without a doubt, Mumbai’s bowlers controlled the game from the very beginning. Ashwani Kumar led the attack with his incredible 4/24 spell. In addition, Deepak Chahar (2/19) and Trent Boult (1/23) provided solid support. Their combined efforts ensured that KKR never gained any momentum.
