Former West Indies Cricketer Joe Solomon Passes Away at 93

Renowned West Indies cricketer Joe Solomon, who played a significant role in the famous tied Test against Australia in 1960, passed away on Saturday at the age of 93. The former Guyana and West Indies batsman left a lasting impact on the cricketing world, and his contributions to the sport will be remembered.

Windies Cricket shared the news of Joe Solomon’s demise on the social media platform ‘X’, expressing condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. Solomon’s cricketing career spanned from 1958 to 1965, during which he played 27 Tests for the West Indies, amassing 1326 runs with an impressive average of 34.

Solomon’s debut in first-class cricket at the age of 26 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. Notably, his first three innings for the West Indies were centuries, showcasing his batting prowess. His consistent performances earned him a place in the squad, and he made a memorable Test debut against India, scoring an unbeaten 100 in Delhi.

However, Joe Solomon will be most remembered for his pivotal role in the historic tied Test against Australia in 1960 at the Gabba. With six runs needed off the final eight-ball over, Solomon’s precise fielding led to a run-out that resulted in the first-ever tied Test. This moment etched his name in cricketing history.

Despite a minor controversy during the tour of Australia when he was out hit-wicket as his cap fell on the stumps, Solomon’s contributions to West Indies cricket left an indelible mark. His passing is mourned by the cricketing community, and his legacy as a cricketing icon will endure. May he rest in peace.
