Egypt plans to become the first African nation to host the Olympics and will launch an official bid to host the 2036 Olympics Games, their youth and sports minister Ashraf Sobhi announced on Saturday.
The move comes after Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi ratified the decision following a meeting with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach in Cairo.
Raising the hopes of the transcontinental nation’s chances of hosting the Games, Bach was quoted praising Egypt’s sports infrastructure and said it would be historic if Egypt gets to host the showpiece event. The summer Olympics will be held in Paris in 2024, followed by Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia in 2032.
However, it will not be an easy task for Egypt to win the bid as they will face fierce competition as it is being speculated that countries like Germany, Mexico, Turkey, Russia, India and Qatar are also looking to throw in their hat to host the mega multi-discipline sporting event.
