With the BJP securing a historic third consecutive victory in Haryana, attention has shifted to who will be the party’s next Chief Minister. Nayab Singh Saini, who took over the reins from Manohar Lal Khattar just 200 days before the 2024 Assembly election, has led the party to a decisive win, defying exit polls and exceeding expectations. Now, the big question is whether Saini will be retained as the Chief Minister or if the BJP will follow its usual strategy of introducing a new face.

Nayab Singh Saini: The Face of the Victory

Saini’s rise to the top of Haryana politics came just months before the election. Despite being a relative newcomer to the Chief Minister’s seat, Saini quickly made his mark. His tenure saw the implementation of several key initiatives, including the expansion of panchayat budgets and electricity reforms that resonated with the rural population. He also introduced the Haryana Agniveer Policy to address public discontent with the Agnipath scheme, helping to regain trust in a state known for its military connections.

His leadership during the campaign, along with his background as a member of an OBC caste that constitutes a significant part of Haryana’s electorate, played a key role in the BJP’s success. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself lauded Saini for his tireless work and growing popularity, leading many to speculate that Saini may be the natural choice for the next Chief Minister.

The Khattar Factor: Will He Stage a Return?

Despite Saini’s impressive performance, former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who served two terms before stepping down in March 2024, still has considerable influence within the party. Khattar, now a Union Minister, was seen as a key figure in shaping the BJP’s candidate list for the election, and his policies laid the groundwork for the party’s continued success in Haryana.

Some BJP insiders believe Khattar may make a return to the state’s leadership if the party feels his experience is needed for long-term governance. His clean image and administrative capabilities are factors that could work in his favor, especially if the BJP opts for a seasoned hand in guiding the state through its next phase of development.

A New Face in the Fray?

While Saini and Khattar are the most likely contenders, the BJP has a history of surprising the public with its choice of leadership. With Haryana being a key battleground state, the BJP may look to introduce a completely new face, someone who can consolidate the party’s hold on both urban and rural voters, while also bringing a fresh approach to governance.

Names like Anil Vij, a senior leader from Ambala and a popular face in the party, and Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar, who has strong roots in Haryana, have also been floated as possible candidates. Both leaders are known for their organizational skills and public appeal, which could make them attractive alternatives.

What’s Next for Haryana?

As the BJP celebrates its victory, the party leadership will soon have to make a decision on who will lead Haryana into its next chapter. If Saini is retained, it will signal continuity and an endorsement of his short but impactful tenure. If Khattar or another leader is chosen, it could reflect the BJP’s focus on long-term governance and preparation for future electoral challenges.

For now, the spotlight remains on Nayab Singh Saini, the “Nayab” leader who guided the BJP to a historic victory in Haryana. Whether he stays on as Chief Minister or passes the baton to another leader, his role in shaping the state’s political landscape is undeniable. The official decision, however, will only become clear once the BJP formally announces its choice for the Chief Minister’s position.
