Russian Nuclear Agency Chief: India To Receive Next-Generation Nuclear Fuel This Summer

Alexey Likhachev, the head of the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, announced that India will receive next-generation nuclear fuel this summer, emphasizing India’s importance as a key partner in the nuclear field, as reported by Russia Today (RT).

During a meeting in Siberia’s Tomsk region, Likhachev hosted Atomic Energy Commission chairman Ajit Kumar Mohanty. He showcased a fourth-generation site that will house what is touted to be the safest atomic reactor in history, according to RT-India.

Highlighting the robust cooperation between the two countries, Likhachev praised India as a significant partner in the nuclear domain. Earlier that day, Mohanty and Likhachev held discussions in Seversk, Tomsk region.

The leaders of the Russian and Indian nuclear industries visited the Pilot Demonstration Energy Complex (PDEC) site in Seversk, Tomsk region, part of the “Proryv” (“the Breakthrough”) strategic industry project, as announced by Rosatom. During their joint visit, they extensively discussed potential areas for Russian-Indian nuclear cooperation.

Likhachev expressed readiness for a substantial expansion of cooperation with India in nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. This includes the serial construction of high-capacity nuclear power units designed by Russia at a new site in India, as well as collaborations in low-power generation projects, the nuclear fuel cycle, and non-power applications of nuclear technologies.

Accompanied by the Indian ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, Mohanty’s visit to Tomsk also included a visit to Tomsk State University and a meeting with regional governor Vladimir Mazur. Discussions with Mazur covered potential cooperation in pharmaceuticals, high technology, education, and research. Ambassador Kumar delivered an open lecture on “India-Russia relations in the current global scenario” at Tomsk State University and met with Indian students from various universities in Tomsk.
