Russia: Four Indian Students Drown In River Near St. Petersburg

Four Indian Medical Students recently drowned in the river near Russia’s St. Petersburg, confirmed Indian mission on Friday.

They further announced, that they are working with Russian establishment to return their bodies to their relatives as early as possible.

These four students which included two boys and two girls belong to the age group of 18-20, who were the students at the nearby Novgorod State University in Novgorod city Veliky.

As per Russian media reports, a female student who treaded on the river Volkhov from the beach, had landed herself in trouble. As a result, her friends tried to help her.

But unfortunately, while trying to help, the three companions got drowned in the river. However, the third boy saved by locals.

According to Indian embassy, proper medical care is given to the girl who survived.

‘Proper medical, including psychological treatment, is being provided to the girl student who was saved… Sincere condolences to the bereaved families’.

Later, the consulate general of India in St Petersburg, offered condolences to the bereaved family.

It further stated that it is collaborating with the local authorities of Veliky Novgorod to promptly repatriate the deceased’s remains to their relatives.

So far, only one body has been recovered, while the search operation for the three others continues.

‘We, with the help of the ministry of external affairs, contacted the embassy in Russia and the consular general in St. Petersburg. They have been very supportive to the family, and we have been coordinating with the judicial as well as the police and disaster management authorities. Best medical care is being provided to the student whose life has been safe… We are hoping that the bodies will be sent back to India as per the international protocol’ said Jalgaon DM Ayush Prasad to ANI.
