Iran To Conduct Snap Presidential Election Amidst Low Voter Turnout

Amidst low voter turnout for presidential elections, Iran is set to conduct a run-off presidential election next week.

As per Iran’s interior ministry, only 40 per cent out of 61 million eligible citizens, came to vote. Thus, recording a low voter turnout since 1979 islamic revolution.

Meanwhile, the election is being fought between two candidates- reformist-backed Masoud Pezeshkian and hardliner Saeed Jalili.

Despite winning, it still failed to get majority due to low voter turnout, as per Al Jazeera.

As per final data from Iran’s election headquarters, Pezeshkian received over 10.41 million votes out of more than 24.5 million counted ballots, thus trailing behind ex- nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili by a margin of 9.47 million votes. Reports Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, parliament conservative speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has managed to garner 3.38 million votes. While islamic leader Mostafa Pourmohammadi garnered 206,397 votes. Thus, he got eliminated from electoral race.

Besides Mostafa, two other candidates like Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani and Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi also withdrew from the race.

Earlier on Friday’s Iran presidential election experienced a low turnout, just like any elections conducted in last 4 years. But what’s shocking is that final figure is low, then what was predicted in the surveys (which predicted 45-53 percent).

The former president Ebrahim Raisi was also elected with low turnout. Which stood at 48.8 per cent. Thus, witnessing low-voter turnout in four decades.
