In Manipur’s Jiribam, Some Flee Attacks For Second Time

Ethnic conflict in Manipur took a fresh turn after violence erupted in Jiribam district last week. The violence broke out after locals discovered the body of Meitei farmer Soibam Saratkumar Singh, who had been missing for weeks. Speaking to The Hindu, some residents reported having to flee their homes for the second time since the conflict began on May 3 last year, while others claimed they were “systematically removed” from their houses.

Since May 3, 2023, the clashes have resulted in 226 deaths, with 1,555 injured and 28 missing. Over 60,000 people across the northeastern state have also been displaced, as reported by The Indian Express. Meanwhile, in the light of the recent violence, Assam on Sunday intensified security measures along its interstate border, particularly in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district. The recent unrest in Manipur has prompted hundreds to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighbouring Assam, amid the ongoing ethnic tensions.
