A South African restaurant and bar, Annies Ladies Bar in Cape Town, has crafted a colossal 3-meter-long (9.8 feet) Gatsby sandwich. Known for its supersized creations, the restaurant previously made a 124-kilogram (273 pounds) burger in 2019.

 History

The Gatsby is a traditional South African takeaway meal, which is made by “slap chips” (soft french fries) and meat in a large bread roll. It originated in Cape Town in the mid-1970s and was designed to feed multiple people. The name reportedly came from the movie “The Great Gatsby” being popular at the time.

Gatsby Sandwich

Following the success of their giant burger, Redelinghuys declared, “So, I said next Saturday I’m going to make the biggest Gatsby in South Africa.”

The sub story !

This massive sub, weighing 65.27 kilograms (145 pounds), featured 10 layers of fillings and cost around $160 in ingredients. Joe Redelinghuys, who runs the bar with his wife, Annie, conceived the idea during a lively night at the bar. The ingredients included 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of tomatoes, 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of assorted meats, three layers of french fries totaling 10 kilograms (22 pounds), calamari, and a generous topping of onion rings. The sauces varied by layer, featuring garlic, cheese, pepper, mushroom, and tartare options. The sauces ranged from garlic to cheese, pepper, mushroom and tartare, depending on which layer.

Challenges

The main challenge was sourcing a suitable bread roll for the massive sandwich, eventually requiring the custom baking and joining of three 1-meter (3 feet) long rolls.

In conclusion, Annies Ladies Bar continues to push culinary boundaries with their larger-than-life creations, showcasing their creativity and dedication to serving memorable dining experiences. The 3-meter-long Gatsby sandwich stands as a testament to their innovation, blending traditional South African flavors with a modern twist. As they look forward to future endeavors,
