NYC: Nonstop rain causes severe flooding, partial residential building wall collapse

Torrential downpours wreaked havoc on the Big Apple over the weekend, flooding city streets and causing the wall of a residential building in the Bronx to collapse.

Drivers became trapped in the middle of rapidly rising waters on city roads, and Bronx residents were forced to evacuate during the spring storm on Sunday. Flood warnings were issued for parts of the city in low-lying and poor-drainage areas on Sunday night, after nearly 5 inches of rain fell in Central Park in the previous 60 hours.

Residents in several buildings on Ryer Street near Valentine Avenue were also evacuated as a precaution, according to department officials. According to the FDNY, staff from the Department of Buildings were on the scene to assess the buildings’ safety. Mayor Eric Adams arrived on the scene as well.

“Was enroute to the Bronx to check on a partial wall collapse at an apartment building on Valentine Avenue due to the heavy rain this weekend,” Adams tweeted. “Thankfully no one was injured and our team at was quick to connect families who needed services with the @RedCross.”
