In an extraordinary blend of engineering precision and high fashion, Axiom Space has teamed up with luxury Italian brand Prada to create the spacesuits for NASA’s upcoming Artemis 3 mission, set to launch in September 2026. The mission, which will see astronauts walking on the lunar South Pole, promises to push the boundaries of space exploration while looking good doing it.
The suits’ external layer, designed to reflect intense heat, takes cues from the iconic white suits worn by Apollo astronauts but with modern upgrades. Prada’s influence is apparent in subtle yet stylish details, such as grey accents and red stripes reminiscent of the Luna Rossa America’s Cup boat, which Prada also sponsored.
According to Axiom Space president Matt Ondler, designing these suits required “extreme engineering” to withstand the harsh lunar conditions. Astronauts will face extreme temperatures, from the blistering 54°C in sunlit areas to the freezing -203°C in shadowed regions. The suit must keep astronauts safe and comfortable for up to eight hours during moonwalks, offering protection against radiation, external pressure, and providing necessary life support, including oxygen.
The Artemis 3 mission will make history by placing the first woman on the moon. To ensure inclusivity and functionality, the new spacesuits are unisex, with adjustable sizes for different body types. The design also prioritizes comfort and performance, combining cutting-edge science and craftsmanship.
One of the most complex aspects of the spacesuit was the design of the boots. Prada’s involvement brought an artistic yet technical approach to insulation and durability, ensuring the footwear can withstand the rugged lunar terrain. However, details about the materials used in these groundbreaking suits remain confidential, adding an air of mystery to the project.
“We’ve blended engineering, science, and art to create the ultimate garments for future moonwalkers,” said Russell Ralston, Axiom’s spacesuit program manager, underscoring the collaboration’s ambitious goal of merging fashion with high-stakes space exploration.
The fusion of high fashion and cutting-edge space technology promises to make the Artemis 3 mission a milestone not only in scientific achievement but in style. With Prada’s signature elegance and Axiom’s advanced engineering, these spacesuits are designed to offer astronauts the best of both worlds—protection and luxury—on the lunar surface.
