The accused, a 27-year-old man, was burned after allegedly spraying petrol at fellow passengers inside the train on Sunday.

According to police, the incident occurred at 9.45 p.m. on Sunday in the D1 compartment of the Alappuzha-Kannur Express, also known as the Executive Express, between Elathur and Koyilandi railway stations.

Shahrukh Saifi, the accused in the  case, has been charged with murder (Section 302 of the IPC [Indian Penal Code]), according to officials.

Earlier on Friday, district sessions judge S V Manesh arrived at the Kozhikode medical college hospital, where Saifi is receiving treatment for his injuries, and remanded him in judicial custody until April 28. He will be transferred to the district jail’s medical cell from here.

According to a senior police official, the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) could be applied only after interrogation. According to the official, Saifi was charged with murder in a case filed by railway police.

Saifi, a Delhi native, is accused of starting a fire on a train, killing three people, including a child.
