There is bad news for people of the national capital as North India will see a drop in temperatures to a minimum of -4 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius in the plains.

Taking to Twitter the weather expert tweeted, “Don’t know how to put this up but the upcoming spell of #Coldwave in #India look really extreme during 14-19th January 2023 with a peak on 16-18th, Never seen temperature ensemble going this low in a prediction model so far in my career. Freezing -4°c to +2°c in plains, Wow!”

Meanwhile, in Punjab, Haryana, New Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Norther Madhya Pradesh there will be a grip of a severe cold wave with a minimum temperature between 0 and 4 degrees Celsius.

Moreover, due to dense fog from the New Delhi Railway station, several trains were delayed on Thursday but no trains diversion took place.

Talking about temperature recorded in Delhi’s Safdarjung was 9.3°C while 9.6°C was recorded at 8.30 am in Palam.

“Due to the current Western Disturbances and consequent stronger surface winds, Fog conditions have significantly improved over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, and West UP. Although Dense to Very Dense Fog cover continues over East UP and Bihar,” India Meteorological Department tweeted.

On January 12, IMD has predicted rainfall and snowfall and from 14 January a fresh cold spell has been predicted.

RK Jenamani, a weather scientist at IMD, said, “For a cold spell, the number of such days experienced should be in the range of 5 to 6 days. A similar situation was experienced in 2006 when the lowest temperature was recorded at 1.9 degrees Celsius. In 2013, there was a similar cold spell.”

However, on Thursday Delhi saw a slight improvement in the air quality with the overall air quality index (AQI) in the ‘very poor’ category at 312.

Furthermore, till 12 January a temporary ban has been imposed on Monday by the AAP government on the plying of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers.
