It has been reported that a third-year B Tech student of IIT Madras died by suicide on Tuesday, said the police. The deceased was identified as Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai native of Andhra Pradesh. The incident took place in the student’s hostel room and marks the second such incident in just a month at the prestigious institute. He was found hanging in his Alakananda hostel room on the IIT-Madras campus.
According to the police officials, Pushpak hadn’t attend yesterday’s classes in the afternoon. At that moment, his friends got suspicious and checked into his room. The room was locked from the inside. His friends somehow opened the room and found him hanging. Kotturpuram police have recorded the matter and sent the body to hospital for autopsy examination. The reasons behind the suicide are not yet known, and investigations are underway. The IIT Madras community has expressed shock and grief over the loss of the student and has urged everyone to prioritize mental health and seek help if needed.
According to a press release from IIT Madras, “a standing Institute Internal Inquiry Committee, including elected student representatives, which has recently been established,” will investigate such occurrences.
