- Zoom’s upgraded AI Companion can now take actions like assigning tasks and scheduling follow-ups.
- New tools like Zoom Tasks, AI Voice Recorder, and custom avatars aim to boost productivity.
- Custom AI and BYOI features let businesses build tailored tools and access external data.
Zoom just dropped a major update for its users—and it’s all about making your workday smoother with the help of AI. The company has officially expanded its AI Companion features, adding several new tools under its Zoom Workplace platform. From generating to-do lists and scheduling meetings to creating personalised AI avatars and pulling insights from customer data, Zoom is showing that it wants to be more than just a video conferencing tool. It wants to be your AI-powered work assistant.
Let’s break down what’s new—and how it could help you work smarter, not harder.
AI Companion gets more “agentic”
In a press release, Zoom says that its AI Companion is evolving beyond a note-taker. It now has agentic AI skills, which means it can take action on your behalf—not just suggest things.
For instance, if you’re in a meeting and someone says, “Let’s follow up next week,” the AI Companion can automatically create a task, assign it to the right person, and even suggest the next steps. It’s like having a super-organised colleague who never misses a detail.
And now, with the Custom AI Companion (available as a paid add-on for $12/user/month), companies can build their own AI tools using Zoom’s drag-and-drop AI Studio. Think of it as a low-code way to tailor AI to your team’s unique workflows—no advanced tech skills required.
Zoom Tasks: AI that keeps track for you
Task management is also getting a major upgrade with Zoom Tasks, now built directly into Zoom Workplace.
Here’s what it can do:
- Auto-generate tasks from meetings, chats, emails, and documents.
- Assign tasks to the right people.
- Recommend next steps so you don’t have to figure it out alone.
- Summarise task lists to help you keep track.
Voice Recorder: Transcripts even without a Zoom call
Not every conversation happens on Zoom—and now, that’s not a problem. The new AI Companion Voice Recorder lets users record in-person conversations, then automatically transcribes and summarises them. It’s ideal for impromptu meetings or interviews where you’d rather focus on the conversation than on taking notes.
This feature is coming to mobile later this month and will be added to Zoom Rooms this summer.
Apart from this, scheduling meetings is also about to get easier. You can now ask AI Companion to find the best time for everyone and even generate a meeting agenda. The AI pulls availability from calendars and sets everything up.
Other upgrades include:
- Private group chats during meetings with custom names.
- Better translation for Zoom Team Chat using Zoom’s own small language models.
- Easier contact sharing without needing to add someone to a group.
Custom Avatars and Clips powered by AI
Don’t feel like recording a walkthrough video? Now you can let your avatar do it for you.
With the new Custom Avatars for Zoom Clips, you can write a script and let AI generate a video using an avatar that looks and sounds like you. It’s designed for quick, asynchronous communication—and comes with security measures like gesture checks and watermarks so people know it’s AI-generated.
This feature is available now with the Custom AI Companion and will soon be offered separately in May.
Deep integrations for power users
We have all heard about BYOB, but have you ever heard about BYOI? Zoom is also letting users bring in their own data with the Bring Your Own Index (BYOI) feature. That means AI Companion can pull information from tools like Amazon Q Business or Glean, letting users access everything from emails to customer records during meetings.
