Apple is said to be working on a new wearable device, smart glasses known as “N50,” that has the potential to change the way we interact with the world. The smart glasses will come equipped with Apple Intelligence features, which will enable them to read their environment and offer customized information. Yet, they won’t provide an entirely immersive augmented reality (AR) experience, unlike Apple’s Vision Pro headset, priced at $3,499 (around Rs 2,98,000).
As per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s smart glasses will be similar to normal spectacles, like Meta’s Project Orion prototype and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, costing around $379 (approximately Rs 32,000). Apple plans to improve this design with a tiny display and app compatibility, which will make these glasses more sophisticated than Meta’s offerings at present.
The glasses will be able to scan the surroundings and display relevant information to the user. But unlike Apple’s Vision Pro headset, these smart glasses will not provide a complete AR experience. Apple is very concerned about privacy, and previous reports indicated that the company might withhold features such as cameras or media capture tools, unlike Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, which enable users to shoot videos and photos.
As far as availability goes, there is no official release date. Some indicate these glasses, and new AirPods with cameras, may hit the market by 2027. Others are speculating a delay, perhaps up to three to five years, as Apple struggles to weigh factors such as weight, battery life, and price. Meanwhile, Meta is rolling out its smart glasses to new markets, including India, Mexico, and the UAE. As the competition is heating up, it’s certain that Apple is gearing up to join the market of smart glasses—but it won’t be happening overnight before they come out.
