The Supreme Court on Monday, while dismissing Vijay Mallya’s review petition against his conviction for contempt, asked him to be present in person on 5 October at 2 pm for hearing on sentencing. The top court also directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to ensure his presence in the courtroom on that day.

The apex court in its judgement said: “Now that the Review Petitions are dismissed, we direct Vijay Mallya to appear before this Court on 05 Oct at 02:00 p.m. and also direct the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India,to facilitate and ensure the presence of Mallya before this Court on that day.”

The apex court’s order came on a review plea filed by Mallya against the 14 July 2017 judgement wherein he was found guilty of contempt for not paying Rs 9,000 crore dues to banks despite repeated directions.

On 9 May 2017, the Supreme Court had directed the liquor baron to appear before it on 10 July, after finding him guilty of contempt of court in a bank loan default case. Soon after this order, Mallya had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court.
