Modi’s First Visit to Russia in Current Term

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Russia on Monday, marking his initial trip to the country since beginning his third term. President Vladimir Putin warmly greeted Modi with a private dinner, expressing delight at meeting his “dear friend.” Putin commended Modi’s re-election, attributing it to his dedicated leadership and effective governance. He lauded Modi’s vigor and strategic vision, underscoring India’s robust economic position and its status as the world’s most populous nation.

Upcoming Official Talks and Honors

Scheduled for Tuesday are official discussions between the two leaders aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation in sectors like trade, energy, and defense. Denis Manturov, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister, greeted Modi upon his arrival at the airport.

During the visit, Modi is set to receive Russia’s highest civilian accolade, a recognition planned since 2019. The agenda includes pivotal engagements such as a Kremlin meeting and substantial talks culminating in mutual agreements. Later in the day, Modi will travel to Vienna.

This visit marks Modi’s return to Russia after nearly five years, with his last trip in 2019 for an economic summit in Vladivostok, highlighting the enduring bond between the two nations.
