On Sunday, Russia’s defense ministry announced the capture of Novohrodivka, a town in eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces move closer to the strategically important city of Pokrovsk. This advance marks a significant development in Russia’s broader goal of taking control of the Donbas region.

Strategic Importance of Pokrovsk
Pokrovsk, a major rail and road hub, is vital for Ukrainian military operations in the region. Russia’s control of nearby Novohrodivka brings its forces within 12 kilometers of Pokrovsk, increasing pressure on Ukrainian defenses.

Ongoing Fierce Battles
The Ukrainian General Staff reported “fierce battles” throughout the Pokrovsk sector, with fighting concentrated around several towns, including Novohrodivka. Ukrainian forces have so far endured 23 assaults in the region.

Contrasting Reports
While Russia claims continued advances, Ukrainian commanders suggest their incursion into Russia’s Kursk region has slowed Russian progress. They argue that the operation diverted Russian forces away from key areas like Pokrovsk.

Broader Context
Russia has controlled around 80% of the Donbas since its invasion in February 2022, and is determined to capture the remaining territory. However, concerns have been raised by Russian war bloggers about the risk of overextension.
